Getting to Know Team Eminent SEO: Jenny Stradling

Jenny Stradling - Eminent SEOHave you ever wanted to get to know the people making all the magic happen? Well here is your chance!

Today we want to introduce you to our leading lady, Jenny Stradling. Jenny is our CEO, but she also focuses on SEO and client website and marketing strategy development.

We asked Jenny to answer a few questions so you can get to know her better. Below are her responses.

So…How long have you been employed at Eminent SEO?

Chris and I started the company in October of 2009.

How would you please describe your job (in a nutshell)?

I look at my job as 3 different roles: CEO, SEO and strategist. As CEO I oversee the company as a whole, this includes financials, legal, employees, systems, tools, partners and clients. As SEO I oversee the Eminent SEO website SEO as well as the client base, ensuring the SEO work is effective. As a strategist I develop custom website and marketing strategies for our own sites as well as our clients.

What might surprise your friends or colleagues to learn about your job?

No task is too small for me. I write checks, wash bathroom towels, do the dishes, get the mail, deposit checks, shop for toilet paper… Media tries to glamorize business ownership, but the truth is when you own your own business everything is your responsibility.

What about Jenny outside of Eminent SEO?

What do you do when you aren’t working?

Almost ALL of my non-work time is spent at home with my family. I have 4 kids ranging in age from teenager to newborn so they require a lot of time and attention. We enjoy cooking, eating, watching movies and doing homework together. Occasionally I will have time to enjoy a bath, glass of wine and a good book – that is my happy place.

What is your favorite lunch food?

I love food… I could eat just about anywhere. My ideal lunch, however, would be sushi and sashimi. I could eat seafood every single day.

Can you read music?

Yes, to a certain extent. My mom is an amazing pianist who taught for 40 years. I took a few piano lessons and learned the basics, but piano wasn’t my thing. I took voice lessons and reading music came in handy when learning new music. Singing was always my first musical love.

Let’s Get Philosophical…

If you were reincarnated as an animal/drink/ice cream flavor, what would it be?

Although being reincarnated as a sexy drink sounds hilarious – I think I would have to say a dolphin. I have always felt connected to them since I was a child. They are so smart – they even use more of their brains than we do. Plus they are beautiful creatures. I think it would be a good life.

Is your glass half full or half empty?

Half full of course. The entire core of who I am has to do with believing in the best. It’s not just about having a positive outlook, but about knowing everything we want and need is ours for the taking. There is more than enough for us all. You have to believe that.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

Warning: Will become irritable if not fed on a regular basis. Also, needs coffee in the morning in order to function. 😛

Can’t get enough? If you want to learn more about Jenny, check out her full bio here.

Vol. 36: Eminent SEO Celebrates 5 Years and More on the Google Penguin Update

Eminent SEO is Celebrating 5 Years in Business!

anniversary
As 2014 comes to a close I am reflecting on yet another exciting year for Eminent SEO. It’s hard to believe that October 2014 marked 5 years since Eminent SEO started officially doing business. I won’t write another lengthy personal journey story like I did last time. This time will share with you our shining moments and exciting news.

What 2014 Brought for Eminent SEO:

New Employees:

employees
Every company loses some employee’s and this last year was no different for us. Of course we were sad to lose some of our favorite people, but not only did we hire some new team members to replace those that we lost, but we actually grew our team as well! We are super excited to be in growth mode as we go into 2015.

Meet the whole team here: //www.eminentseo.com/about/

New Website:

website

The idea of a new site was discussed long ago… but client work was always the top priority so we put off the daunting task for years. In 2014 we (finally) made it happen and we are so proud to have our new and improved site.

Read more about the changes and additions here: //www.eminentseo.com/blog/new-eminent-seo-website-live/

Max Swag:

swag

Max, our brand mascot, has been a symbol of the Eminent SEO brand since the beginning. He can be found on our website, our social platforms and even on our business cards. So many people took interest in him that we decided to turn him into his own product line we are calling “Max Swag”. You can find him on coffee mugs, t-shirts, cell phone cases and much more. As part of the new website launch we also made Max Swag available for purchase in our online stores. Who doesn’t want a cute sweatshirt with Max on it for the cold winter months?

Get your Max Swag here: //www.eminentseo.com/shop/

Eminent SEO Owners, Chris and Jenny, Have a Baby:

baby

Meet Camden Weatherall, the newest member to the Eminent SEO family. Born September 8th 2014 he is now almost 2 months old. It was a fun time, having the baby and enjoying my maternity leave with him. I am now back to work and enjoying my team again. A big thank you to all of our clients and the team for supporting us during this time. It’s not easy for the CEO AND the President to both leave for any amount of time, so we really did lean on the team a lot to make sure everything ran smoothly.

You guys ROCK!

Good to Know in SEO (RIGHT NOW)

Google Penguin 3.0 is Confirmed:

penguin

The on-going battle to rid the web of “bad links” continues. Penguin originally rolled out in April of 2012. Since the launch of the Google algorithm update there has been several updates, some smaller but some major changes. Penguin 3.0 rolled out on October 17th, 2014 and marks the next big refresh to the algorithm.

Although Google announced the roll-out in October, over 2 weeks later we are still seeing the impact the update has had on the web. It appears to be slowly rolling out which means how many sites have been or will be impacted is still to be determined. This is even more difficult to determine since Panda 4.1 is also still slowly rolling out as well as the Pirate update, creating overlapping algorithm updates.

Thanks Google.

Eminent SEO is Celebrating 4 Years – A Personal Journey

Eminent SEO is Celebrating 4 Years

How I Got Into Marketing

Roughly 9 years ago I was a young single mom with 2 little kids. I was tired of working the long hours required of a restaurant manager… and I found myself at a career crossroad. Do I continue pursuing the restaurant management path I was on, which, although it was tiring and stressful, offered security – or, do I take a leap of faith and start over in a totally different field?

I made the tough decision to leave restaurants altogether and humbly accepted an entry level position at a young internet marketing firm as a billing assistant. Uneducated, but hungry, I was eager to learn and excited to work in this new space.

Initially I was not required to understand marketing or even the products we offered- I was in billing, so I was to perform basic billing tasks.  I spent several months perfecting my basic daily tasks and found myself questioning processes which lead to many questions and a lot of time researching on my own. I found the idea of organic website marketing fascinating and my desire to learn more continued to grow.

Because the company was small and young, there was a lack of internal process and training, so I took it upon myself to study at home and teach myself as much as I could about Google’s algorithms, keyword research, link building, customer service and strategic marketing.

After a few months of studying and learning, I requested to be considered for an opening as a sales assistant. My boss was surprised at my request and felt I was not equipped for the position. I explained that I had been studying and asking questions and felt prepared. He decided to give me a shot – but I sensed he was hesitant.

I was excited for the chance, but I quickly learned as the only female in the sales room, I was in for some serious testing. I was not only going to have to prove myself as a competent sales assistant, I was going to have to prove that a girl was just as capable as the boys.

You know how the saying goes… what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? I would happily share the nitty gritty details of how I was treated and the shocking things I discovered… but for now I will leave it at this: Never underestimate a young single mother with multiple mouths to feed.

That year I was top sales person. That year I became the first ever female sales manager. That year I discovered my passion for marketing. That year I found my true career path. That year changed me forever.

Eminent SEO Was Born

Several years later in October of 2009, after many changes, learning experiences and new opportunities, I found myself at a crossroads yet again.

I had a choice to make. Do I leave this space and start over yet again? Or, do I persevere and continue doing what I love, knowing I would have to sacrifice a lot?

What happened next was a blur… two of my best friends and I started working, not knowing then that what we had actually set in motion was the beginning of our own company – what was later to become Eminent SEO.

I like to joke that we started the company with a Hotmail account and a spreadsheet. We literally had nothing. Days ran into nights and for months and months we worked around the clock trying to satisfy the client demands while still learning how to set up systems, structures and build a team.

I thank God every day for my dear friends who stuck by me and worked their asses off to make this happen (a special shout out to Tatiana and Chris). Our team of 3 turned into 4, then 5, 6, 7… then the referrals kept coming in and we were expanding our services and before we knew it, our small group turned into a large team and Eminent SEO is now supporting a full time staff, several dedicated partners, dozens of resellers and hundreds of client websites.

When we started, we didn’t do it for the money. We did it for the people. The client’s that came to us were desperate for help. They had been burned and found themselves at a dead end and needed to find people who they could trust. Chris, my partner, and I knew that in order to find success and also contentment with who we are, we had to build our business on doing the right thing. Sure, it’s easy to make a quick buck doing SEO – but we were in this for more. At the end of the day you have to be able to look at your staff, your clients… your kids… and say, no matter what we always tried to do the right thing.

Eminent SEO has been in business now for 4 years this month. We celebrate client successes regularly in the office and find it extremely rewarding that we are able to put forth products and services that help our clients reach their own business and website goals. Our team is made up of an eclectic group of hard working people who are committed to doing the very best job they can do.

A Big Thank You

I wake up every day feeling blessed for this continued opportunity and I just want to end this blog post with a huge thank you. Thank you to the team for sticking with us and choosing to be part of this exciting journey with us. And, thank you to our partners and our clients. You gave us a chance, some of you even when we were just getting started, and we grew together in the process. Now, as we all continue to grow, I look forward to many more years of continued successes in our business and personal lives.

I love marketing. I love helping others grow. And, most of all, I love knowing that I am investing into something that I can always be proud of.

Wishing you the same.

Cheers,

Jenny Stradling

Let’s Talk SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The search engines are looking at a LOT of things, but one primary way to ensure your site gains authority and ranks for the keywords people are searching for to find your site – is to build links. So, we thought we would give you a few:

Link Building Tips:

*Tip: Use longer tailed and geo targeted keywords in your link building for better conversions!

It’s important to understand your client base and what they are searching for, but it’s more important to target keywords that will CONVERT than those with just the highest search volumes. Many times the long tail keyword phrases (think: “bankruptcy lawyer in Phoenix Arizona”) are much better for conversions than the root term (ex: “bankruptcy lawyer”) even though they have lower search volumes. Also, long tail keywords are generally much less competitive and therefore much easier (and less costly) to rank for!

*Tip: Use variety in your keyword selection to avoid an artificial backlink portfolio! (Panda Update says so!)

It’s always been important to target multiple keyword phrases and pages within your website, but after the Panda update it’s become even more important. Google is sophisticated enough to detect a pattern in the keyword usage. So, if you want to rank for an important term, use it – but also use similar supporting terms in a variety of ways to ensure Google doesn’t flag your new links as potentially phony. Example: Want to rank for “Nike Shoes”? Build links using terms like: “Buy Nike Shoes”, “Buy Nike Shoes Online”, “Discount Nike Shoes”, “Mens Nike Shoes”, etc

*Tip: Your links should come from many different types of websites for a more natural looking portfolio!

Sure, there are high quality sites, strong in the key elements that make it an ideal site for hosting your link (think: higher Page Rank, Aged Domain, Strong in Relevancy, etc) but if every link pointing to your site uses the “perfect” criteria, it actually creates suspicion with Google. Not everyone that would naturally chose to link to you would come from high quality sites. Mix it up and make sure there is variety in your backlinks. The more diverse, the more natural the link building efforts appear.

Let’s Talk Social Media

Our beautiful Social Media Director Star Padilla wrote up a nice blog post on Google+, the new Google Social Media platform:

You could say, Google+ is the ‘new’ hot social network to hit the web. I mean as of June 28, about 25million people have visited Google+. Here’s the breakdown by country, according to comScore:

  • 6.44 million from the U.S.
  • 3.62 million from India
  • Roughly 1 million from both Canada and the UK
  • 920,000 from Germany
  • More than 780,000 from Brazil
  • About 500,000 from both France and Taiwan
