Vol. 47: Eminent SEO Celebrates 6 Years, New Hire, What’s New in SEO

Eminent SEO News

Eminent SEO 6-Year Anniversary
October marks our anniversary! Six years ago this month, we launched as an SEO-focused agency out of Mesa, Arizona. Not to be held back by the country’s recession, we’ve steadily grown into a full-service digital marketing agency. We are blessed to have made it this far, and we’re ever grateful to our many amazing clients, partners, team members and anybody who has supported us along the way.

Here’s to big things in year number 7 and to many great years to come. Cheers!

New Hire: Social Media Assistant

The Eminent team is growing, as we hired Social Media Assistant Stephanie Samson in September!

What’s New in SEO: Rich Snippets on the Rise in Google Search Results

If you have structured markup in the code of some or all of your web pages, it could produce rich snippets when users see a link to your content on a search engine results page (SERP). Rich snippets are elements such as five-star ratings, images, video previews and more that show up in the search results on Google or Bing. Think of typing in the name of a song and seeing a preview to a YouTube video show up in your search results.

A new study by Blue Nile Research finds that pages with rich snippets that land in spot No. 2 on a SERP get clicked on more often (61 percent) than a rich snippet-less result in the top position (48 percent), contrary to the usual line of thinking where the first result almost always gets clicked more than any other. Additionally, while Google doesn’t currently move a result higher just for having structured markup and data, a webmaster trends analyst for the company said in Google+ Hangout that the search engine may eventually add those characteristics to its algorithm, and certain pages would then rank higher because they generate rich snippets. If you’re not sure how to make your web pages produce rich snippets, now’s the time to start figuring and testing it out.

How to Get Them to Like You, Really Like You on Instagram

Many businesses are starting to stretch their social media efforts to Instagram, but not all of them are seeing a strong return on their time investment. Read how to optimize each of your posts on Instagram so that users will be drawn to liking and commenting on your content more than ever.

Why You Should Consider Keeping Your Ugly Website As Is

Does your company have an ugly or outdated website? Well, don’t jump the gun on rolling out a complete redesign. See why you should tread with caution before rebuilding your site with new navigation and a more modern design.

Featured Service: Social Media Management and Marketing

Social media can be fun, but it can also be confusing or even overwhelming, especially to businesses trying to maintain several social accounts. Social media gives you a chance to increase your online visibility, brand awareness and website traffic, because it’s many aspects of business operations rolled into one: marketing, sales, public relations, advertising and even customer service. If your company isn’t on social media or is only doing Facebook, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to draw attention to your brand and generate new sales leads.

Good To Know In SEO: Google Update Caters to News and Magazine Websites

Google updated its core search algorithm in the middle of June, and Search Metrics SEO Blog noticed it largely benefited websites belonging to news publications. The websites for Fortune, NBC News, Tech Crunch, Business Insider and the Wall Street Journal were among the winners in SEO visibility because of the latest Google update, which largely focused on informational and newsworthy keywords. Search Engine Land writer Barry Schwartz said even his small SEO news site, seroundtable.com, saw a 134 percent increase in keyword visibility on Google and a 25 percent increase in Google organic referrals a week after the update. Search Metrics noted, however, that news publications’ recent gains in visibility seem to be only a temporary success.

Good To Know In SEO: What Is Happening With #Mobilegeddon

Last month we notified you about one of THE biggest Google algorithm updates in years: #Mobilegeddon. So, now that it has officially rolled out how is it impacting search and mobile marketing?

Despite all of the buzz and speculation, the mobile friendly algorithm update has not been as significant as most of us expected. Google confirmed the algorithm update did indeed roll out on April 21st, 2015 and some noticed changes to their mobile rankings and traffic as early as the next day. However, most are saying that the shifts were really not notably different.

In this Search Engine Land post Danny Sullivan reviews the winners and losers of Mobilegeddon. This preliminary list identifies Reddit as the top loser, obviously they took a hit because the site doesn’t test as mobile friendly (what were they thinking?).

The good news for any “losers” is that there’s a pretty good chance you can regain your lost rankings within a few days if you just make your website mobile friendly. We know it’s not THAT easy – but, don’t say you weren’t warned!

How Seasonal Search Plays a Role in Your SEO and PPC Campaigns
Does your business have peak times during the year where sales are a lot higher? This could lead to adjusting campaign budgets and more. Learn more about seasonal search and how this plays a role in your campaigns.

Yesterday Facebook started rolling out a new feature called “Scrapbook”. The feature serves as a handy tool for organizing all those baby (or pet!) photos and storing them in a dedicated, easy-to-access place. Awesome, right? Read our blog to get all the details!

How To Get The Most Out Of Your LinkedIn Profile
Are you happy with the way you are using LinkedIn? With more than 347 million users, LinkedIn is the most popular social network for professionals as well as one of the top social networks overall. However, without the right knowledge, it becomes just another time-sucking social network.

See Ya Online!

Don’t forget, it’s not too late to turn that outdated, non-mobile friendly website into a fully responsive site. We can re-design and/or re-develop your website so that it meets all of Google’s requirements and also enhances your user experience for higher conversions. Just call us for a quote: 800.871.4130.

Vol. 38: Holiday Celebrations, 2014 Algorithm Changes, Dec. Blog Roundup

Eminent SEO Team News

Here in Arizona it’s been a little chilly… but nothing like you East Coasters! We hope you are staying nice and warm by the fire!

ESEO Team News

The end of the year is always a lot of fun, but this year December was especially exciting. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Annual Company “Ugly Sweater” Holiday Party

This year we found a super cool spot in downtown Phoenix called The Duce for our holiday party. The place is fun and eclectic – offering everything from unique drinks and food to shopping, dancing and even a boxing ring! We all enjoyed each other’s company and laughed at the ugly sweaters everyone was wearing:

Secret Santa Gift Exchange

Of course we also had our annual Secret Santa gift exchange. Shopping for a co-worker with a $20.00 budget cap is harder than it looks! It’s a fun challenge though and between the thoughtful gifts and homemade potluck we all had a great time.

Good to Know in SEO (RIGHT NOW)

If you are in the industry you already know that 2014 brought a LOT of Google algorithm changes and updates. With so many updates it’s hard to keep up! So, we thought we would recap the year in updates for you. Here it is:

Confirmed Google Algorithm Updates in 2014 – A Complete List

Page Layout #3 – February 2014
A refresh to Google’s page layout algorithm, some people call it “top heavy”. Penalizes sites with too many ads above the fold.

Payday Loan 2.0 — May 2014
Targets especially spammy queries.

Panda 4.0 #26 — May 2014
The update targeted sites with low quality content.

Payday Loan 3.0 — June 2014
Official statements suggested that 2.0 targeted specific sites, while 3.0 targeted spammy queries.

Authorship Photo Drop — June 2014
Google announced they would be dropping all authorship photos from SERPs.

Pigeon — July 2014
An update that drastically changed which factors Google uses to determine local rankings.

HTTP/SSL Update – August 2014
Google announced they will now give preference to secured sites and that adding encryption will provide a “lightweight” boost.

Authorship Removed — August 2014
First Google removed authorship photos, come August 28th they announce they would also be removing authorship markup. By the next morning all authorship disappeared from the SERPs.

Panda 4.1 — September 2014
A Panda update, with an algorithmic component.

“In The News” Box – October 2014
A display change to News-box results that resulted in an expanded news site SERP presence.

Penguin 3.0 — October 2014 with continuing changes until December 6, 2014
A slow moving update came with the release of the new Penguin. This update was probably data-only.

Pirate 2.0 — October 2014
This one was to fight the media piracy. Obviously targeted and affected only a small set of sites.

WHEW! That is a lot of Google updates to keep up with! Were you impacted by any of the algorithm or SERP changes this year?

Google Penguin Updated… Again:

Just a few days ago SE Roundtable posted a blog stating that Google Penguin updated, again! Although the update is still unconfirmed by Google, many webmasters are commenting about changes to their rankings – in a good way.

From Barry Schwartz on December 5th:
“On Thanksgiving day, Google started to reverse Penguin penalties (I know Google doesn’t call them penalties). This was a good thing and Google actually confirmed this was part of the Penguin 3.0 rollout. Then on Thursday, those gains were rolled back for many. When John Mueller of Google was asked about it, he didn’t seem to know what was going on. Now this morning, the reversals seem to have been reversed and now sites hit are Penguin free, or at least some.”

What’s interesting is the webmasters are mainly talking about recoveries – saying things such as:

“Since yesterday I notice sites (more than a few) that were slapped between 10 and 20 October (rankings fall 200+) are now completely regaining their rankings… So, did Penguin devalued certain links (and thus slapped all these sites) and now it’s backtracking (or whatever it’s called) and as such releasing all these sites?”

What do you think? Have you seen fluctuations or what appear to be recoveries? Let us know in the comments!

Vol. 36: Eminent SEO Celebrates 5 Years and More on the Google Penguin Update

Eminent SEO is Celebrating 5 Years in Business!

anniversary
As 2014 comes to a close I am reflecting on yet another exciting year for Eminent SEO. It’s hard to believe that October 2014 marked 5 years since Eminent SEO started officially doing business. I won’t write another lengthy personal journey story like I did last time. This time will share with you our shining moments and exciting news.

What 2014 Brought for Eminent SEO:

New Employees:

employees
Every company loses some employee’s and this last year was no different for us. Of course we were sad to lose some of our favorite people, but not only did we hire some new team members to replace those that we lost, but we actually grew our team as well! We are super excited to be in growth mode as we go into 2015.

Meet the whole team here: //www.eminentseo.com/about/

New Website:

website

The idea of a new site was discussed long ago… but client work was always the top priority so we put off the daunting task for years. In 2014 we (finally) made it happen and we are so proud to have our new and improved site.

Read more about the changes and additions here: //www.eminentseo.com/blog/new-eminent-seo-website-live/

Max Swag:

swag

Max, our brand mascot, has been a symbol of the Eminent SEO brand since the beginning. He can be found on our website, our social platforms and even on our business cards. So many people took interest in him that we decided to turn him into his own product line we are calling “Max Swag”. You can find him on coffee mugs, t-shirts, cell phone cases and much more. As part of the new website launch we also made Max Swag available for purchase in our online stores. Who doesn’t want a cute sweatshirt with Max on it for the cold winter months?

Eminent SEO Owners, Chris and Jenny, Have a Baby:

baby

Meet Camden Weatherall, the newest member to the Eminent SEO family. Born September 8th 2014 he is now almost 2 months old. It was a fun time, having the baby and enjoying my maternity leave with him. I am now back to work and enjoying my team again. A big thank you to all of our clients and the team for supporting us during this time. Google Penguin 3.0 is Confirmed:

penguin

The on-going battle to rid the web of “bad links” continues. Penguin originally rolled out in April of 2012. Since the launch of the Google algorithm update there has been several updates, some smaller but some major changes. Penguin 3.0 rolled out on October 17th, 2014 and marks the next big refresh to the algorithm.

Although Google announced the roll-out in October, over 2 weeks later we are still seeing the impact the update has had on the web. It appears to be slowly rolling out which means how many sites have been or will be impacted is still to be determined. This is even more difficult to determine since Panda 4.1 is also still slowly rolling out as well as the Pirate update, creating overlapping algorithm updates.

Thanks Google.

Google Panda 4.1 is Now Rolling Out…

Normally ANY Google Algorithm update announcement strikes fear into webmasters across the world, but this one might be different!

Pierre Far of Google announced a Panda update on his Google+ page just a few days ago:

“Earlier this week, we started a slow rollout of an improved Panda algorithm, and we expect to have everything done sometime next week.

Based on user (and webmaster!) feedback, we’ve been able to discover a few more signals to help Panda identify low-quality content more precisely. This results in a greater diversity of high-quality small- and medium-sized sites ranking higher, which is nice.

Depending on the locale, around 3-5% of queries are affected.”

From what we can tell this algorithm update is a pretty major one, but it’s hard to say if the estimated 3-5% of queries affected is actually accurate until the dust settles a bit more.

Notice Pier also said that this update is friendlier to smaller sites, “greater diversity of high-quality small- and medium-sized sites ranking higher”. If this is true than this update is great news for some of the smaller guys who have been struggling.

Keep in mind that Panda is intended to focus on targeting low quality content and this update, Panda 4.1, is said to add a “few more signals to help Panda identify low-quality content more precisely.”

If you have seen a drop in rankings over the last few days, then you may have been hit by Panda 4.1. If you were hit, then you likely have a low quality content issue with your site. Some people are saying game and lyric sites might be some of the biggest losers.

Google Penguin… Crushing Sites Since 2012

Google Penguin Algorithm Update - Eminent SEO

In case you’ve forgotten, the Penguin update is Google’s algorithm update that punishes bad or “spammy” link building techniques.

The full Penguin History here:

  1. Penguin version 1 happened on April 24th, 2012 – Called 1.0
  2. Penguin version 2 happened on May 25th, 2012 – Version of 1.0
  3. Penguin version 3 happened on October 5th, 2012 – Version of 1.0
  4. Penguin version 4 happened on May 22nd, 2013 – Called 2.0
  5. Penguin version 5 happened on October 4th, 2013 – Version of 2.0
  6. ?

With 5 updates in just over two years the SEO community is surprised we haven’t had another Penguin update yet, I mean it has been almost 10 months! But nadda.

The thing that scares webmasters and SEO’s about Penguin is once you’re hit it’s a HUGE process to fix the issue and get reincluded with Google. This is NOT a job for an amateur. In fact, if you don’t know what you are doing you are potentially stuck with this penalty for years to come.

So why no new updates? Here are a few speculations:

  1. Google is still working on a data refresh – I mean, updating an algorithm is NO JOKE!
  2. Some think that updating the algorithm too frequently actually makes it easy for turn and burn spammers…. Hrm, not sure we totally agree, but I guess.
  3. They are satisfied with the last version. I mean, sites are still getting hit, so why fix what isn’t broken (so to speak).

I personally think it’s a combination of all 3, but I wouldn’t put ANYTHING past Google.

So, now what?

Since it doesn’t look like Google is letting up any time soon, those that are hit need to seek out real help or run the risk of seriously hurting their business. If you bank on organic website traffic and you are experiencing a penalty, you need to hire a professional STAT. And when I say a professional, I mean us of course.

It’s a process, but we have successfully gotten link penalties lifted and sites reincluded multiple times now, so we know what it takes and we are ready and willing to help! Just give us a call: 1.800.871.4130.

“Google My Business” is Here

Just weeks ago Google announced the launch of their newest tool set/application “Google My Business”. So, what is it?

This suit of tools is intended to act like a one-stop shop for business owners to update their business information, read and respond to reviews, add or change photos and use Google+ (including the local place page/map section). This means any businesses currently using Places for Business (we still call this Google maps) will be upgraded to Google My Business.

One thing we’ve also noticed is that Google My Business gives you a much easier to use dashboard with integrations such as updating your Google+ URL, sharing a status on your Google+ page and key performance insights, which it didn’t have before.

If you’re an AdWords Express user this also provides you with a better understanding on how your business is found on Google through important trends like what the users are clicking on and where they are coming from.

The Android and iOS mobile apps are already available.

Google Drops Google+ Profile Photos and Circle Count from Authorship in Search Results

Although Google is calling this a “minor” change in the search results, anyone who’s worked hard on their Google authorship may not see it that way. Just a few days ago Google announced that they are dropping the profile photo and circle count from the search listings where Google Authorship is assigned to a listing.

Pulled from this Search Engine Land post by Barry Schwartz, here is the new design verses the old one:

NEW (No image, no circle count):
new

OLD (Author image, name+ circle count):
old

Note – Google Authorship has also been updated in the news results. It still contains a profile image, but it’s much smaller and the circle count has been dropped from there as well:
authorship

This rollout applies to desktop and mobile results.

To us it’s clear that the removal of the profile and the circle count will reduce the amount of visibility for the post. Why would Google do this now? What do you think?
