Search Is Changing Again. Here’s What Businesses Should Know

Search Is Changing Again

I have worked in SEO and digital marketing since 2005, and one thing has remained constant: the industry never stays still for long.

Lately, several changes have caught my attention. People are increasingly starting their research inside AI platforms, Google appears to be getting more selective about which pages it indexes and Arizona cannabis businesses are now operating under significant new advertising requirements.

These may sound like separate issues, but they all point to the same larger shift.

Businesses need useful content, a trustworthy brand, a technically sound website and a marketing strategy that can adapt as platforms, customer behavior and regulations change.

Here are three developments we are watching right now.

Featured:
ChatGPT Is Changing the Search Journey

A newly released study found that broader access to ChatGPT Search was associated with a 9.4% decline in traditional search activity.

The study also found that ChatGPT generated an outside website click in only 5.2% of sessions, compared with 31.1% of Google searches.

That does not mean Google or SEO is disappearing. It suggests that the customer journey may be changing.

Someone may begin by asking ChatGPT a question, use AI to narrow down the options and then return to Google to search for a company by name, read reviews or visit its website directly. We have already seen cases where organic website traffic has softened while branded and direct traffic improved. That may mean the interest did not disappear. The customer simply took a different path.

For businesses, the answer is not to abandon SEO. It is to build a broader visibility strategy that includes AI search, traditional search, reviews, social proof, useful content and a website that builds trust when people are ready to take the next step.

The original study analyzed U.S. desktop browsing behavior and found that AI search sends fewer outbound visits while directing the visits it does send toward a different mix of websites.

Arizona Cannabis Advertising Rules Changed July 1

Arizona cannabis businesses also need to pay attention to a major change that took effect July 1, 2026.

The state’s new advertising requirements affect websites, social media, email, text messaging, video, printed materials and other promotional content. The law includes new restrictions involving required warnings, license information, audience age, imagery, potency claims and content that may appeal to people under 21.

We recently created a detailed guide and downloadable checklist to help Arizona dispensaries, cannabis brands and their marketing partners review existing materials for potential compliance issues.

Is Google Crawling Your Pages but Not Indexing Them?

Another issue we are seeing more often in Google Search Console is:

Crawled, currently not indexed

This means Google found and crawled a page but chose not to include it in the search index, at least for now.

There can be technical reasons for this, but in many cases the problem comes back to quality. Thin pages, duplicate topics, outdated content and pages that do not add enough unique value are all common culprits.

This is especially important for older websites with years of blog posts and overlapping content. Publishing more is not always the answer. Sometimes the better strategy is to improve, combine, redirect or remove pages that no longer serve a clear purpose.

We are reviewing this more closely across the websites we manage, including our own, because a healthy website is not just about creating new content. It is also about making sure the content already there is useful, current and worth indexing.

Closing

The platforms may change, but the fundamentals are still recognizable.

Businesses need content that provides real value, websites that work properly, brands people trust and marketing strategies that account for the entire customer journey.

At Eminent SEO, we are continuing to evaluate how AI search, Google indexing changes and new industry requirements affect the businesses we support.

Search, AI & Marketing Insights

Hi there,

Search and digital marketing continue to evolve quickly. Between AI-driven search experiences, ongoing algorithm adjustments, and changing user behavior, it’s becoming harder to separate real signals from noise.

Each month I like to share a few things that caught my attention. A mix of industry updates and observations from the work we’re doing here at Eminent SEO.

Here are a few insights worth paying attention to this month.

Search Insight

AI Is Changing Informational Search

One of the biggest shifts happening right now is how AI-generated answers are changing informational search.

Instead of sending users to a list of links, AI tools and search engines increasingly summarize answers directly. That means visibility isn’t just about ranking anymore.

Content strategy is evolving from “rank for keywords” to “be the source models reference.”

What this means for marketers:

  • Authority signals matter more than ever
  • Brands that publish expert content are more likely to be cited
  • Mentions and citations across the web influence visibility
  • Consistent publishing strengthens topical authority

AI Insight

AI Is Moving From Content Creation to Workflow Automation

Last year most companies experimented with AI for writing content.
Now the bigger shift is happening behind the scenes.

Marketing teams are using AI to:

  • Automate reporting and campaign summaries
  • Analyze performance data faster
  • Support creative production and content planning
  • Reduce repetitive internal tasks

The biggest value isn’t replacing marketers.

It’s removing friction from workflows so teams can focus on strategy.

Performative Marketing Is Costing Brands Trust

One trend I’ve noticed recently is brands showing up loudly for certain cultural moments, then going quiet again the rest of the year.

Consumers can tell the difference between companies that integrate their values into everyday operations and those that simply check a calendar box.

The cost of getting that wrong isn’t backlash.

It’s credibility.

A Few Other Things Worth Watching

A few trends we’re keeping an eye on right now:

  • Short-form video continues to dominate discovery across TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts
  • Creator partnerships and user-generated content are outperforming polished brand ads
  • AI tools are accelerating creative production across design and content workflows
  • Discovery is expanding beyond Google as AI assistants and conversational search grow

How Agencies Are Standing Out Right Now

We’re seeing some clear shifts in how brands evaluate agency partners.

Agencies that stand out in pitches tend to:

  • Lead with social-first ideas rather than traditional 30-second ad concepts
  • Position themselves clearly as specialists or consultative partners
  • Show practical AI integration into marketing workflows
  • Be transparent about media buying and measurement
  • Demonstrate how they prove performance across channels

In a crowded market, clarity, transparency, and results matter more than ever.

If you’re thinking about how these shifts might impact your marketing strategy this year, feel free to reach out.

Until next time,

Vol 150: Kick Off 2025: Search Trends That Shape Your Strategy

Hi Again Friends,

Can you believe it’s 2025 and we’re already two weeks in? Time flies when you’re building empires-or recovering from the flu. My family got hit hard over the holidays, so I’m just now diving back into the swing of things.

While I was stuck on the couch with endless tea and tissues, I found myself scrolling through Google’s Year in Search 2024. It got me thinking about what these trends mean for us as we head into 2025.

From the rise of AI-driven queries to hyper-local searches and everything in between, search behavior continues to evolve faster than ever-and staying ahead of the curve is no longer optional. In this month’s newsletter, we’ll dive into how 2024’s search data can inspire our strategies for the new year.

Top Search Trends from 2024 and What They Mean for You in 2025

Last month, in Newsletter Vol. 149, we shared actionable tips on preparing your business for 2025’s evolving digital landscape. But as the Year in Search 2024 report reveals, staying ahead requires an even deeper understanding of search behavior.

Here’s how the latest search trends can shape your strategy this year:

The Rise of AI-Driven Queries

AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT and Google Bard have changed how people look for information. Instead of typing static keywords, users now ask conversational, complex questions.

What this means for you:

  • Content must be optimized for natural language and semantic search.
  • FAQs, in-depth guides, and conversational content will become key players in driving traffic.
  • Eminent SEO can help you create content tailored to AI-driven search engines.

Zero-Click Searches Are Dominating

More users are finding their answers directly on search results pages, thanks to features like featured snippets, knowledge panels, and “People Also Ask.”

What this means for you:

  • Your SEO strategy must aim for position zero with optimized meta descriptions, headers, and concise, valuable content.
  • Leveraging structured data is a must for visibility.
  • We specialize in strategies to get your brand in front of audiences, even without a click

Hyper-Local Searches Are Booming

Searches like “near me” or for specific neighborhoods continue to grow, as consumers expect hyper-relevant results tailored to their location.

What this means for you:

  • Optimizing Google Business Profiles (GBP) and using localized keywords are non-negotiables.
  • Reviews and reputation management have never been more critical.
  • Eminent SEO can craft a localized SEO strategy to connect you with nearby customers.

Short-Form Content Is Winning

From TikTok to YouTube Shorts, users increasingly prefer bite-sized, digestible content. Even search behavior reflects this shift, with queries leading to short, actionable results.

What this means for you:

  • Your content strategy needs to integrate short-form videos, blog snippets, and quick how-tos.
  • Leveraging trending platforms with strategic SEO is essential.
  • We’re here to guide your brand’s entry into short-form success while keeping it search-friendly.

Visual Search and Voice Search Are Growing

Users now search with images or voice commands, driven by advancements in mobile technology and smart devices.

What this means for you:

  • Your website must be mobile-friendly, fast, and optimized for visual and voice queries.
  • Tools like alt text, detailed product descriptions, and conversational tone are critical.
  • Our team ensures your site is optimized for these emerging search methods.
